Role Summary

The role is as Manager in the firm’s Company Advisory (“CA”) department, with an opportunity to work on a portfolio of high-value/ technically complex clients. It will appeal to an experienced accountant that enjoys a mix of recurring work and special work.

Since Gail Cobley arrived as Head of Department in 2016, and with the founding partners’ proven business winning skills, the department has continued to attract clients with increasingly complex needs. In addition to needing core services (year-end accounts, VAT, PAYE), the large clients typically require advice on a range of high-level matters including but by no means limited to share structuring, tax structures for investors, corporation tax reliefs available, financial statements disclosures and tax planning for the directors.

The CA department looks after approximately 500  companies and Limited Liability Partnerships, the majority of which are owner-managed. London is a hotbed for entrepreneurs and new ideas, and the department gets its share of the market, attracting almost 100 new clients in 2016-17. Clients identified for the role’s portfolio conduct a wide range of activities, predominantly but not exclusively in the service sector. Examples include Bitcoin traders, App designers, Marketing, PR, IT and recruitment consultancies, Commercial property refurbishment, filming services, holiday lets, a restaurant, catering company and a wine merchants. 

The role is full time and London based, however there will be an opportunity to discuss flexible working. This could mean either being based at the company’s office in Uffcott, or at home, with visits to London as required to maintain contact with clients and the team. 

In the role, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

  • Take a lead role in advising high-value/ technically complex clients on both strategic and day to day requirements.

  • Develop communication skills, both internally and with decision makers at clients.

  • Research and advise on technical issues (internally and externally).

  • Build knowledge of tax planning opportunities that exist for SMEs and their owners.

  • Build new business development skills.

  • Develop team management skills

The responsibilities of the individual in this position include:

  • For clients in the individual’s portfolio:
    • Oversee the relationship at manager level to ensure that all services are being provided to the highest standards.
    • Manager responsibility for day to day requests and queries.
    • Manager responsibility for the preparation of accounts and corporation tax returns.
    • Liaise with Partners and Senior Manager on salient matters.
    • Liaise with the Private Clients Tax Department to ensure that clients get optimal tax solutions.
    • Liaise with the Practice Manager to ensure that invoices are raised for agreed amounts on a timely basis.
  • For clients in the team portfolio
    • Provide technical reviews and support.
    • Advise on day to day enquiries that require manager level input.
  • Manage and train junior staff.

The successful candidate will have extensive demonstrable skills and experiences including the following:

  • ACA qualified or ACCA qualified, and able to demonstrate a strong technical background.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with business owners.
  • Team leadership experience.
  • Strong knowledge of technical and regulatory requirements of accounts preparation and corporation tax returns.
  • Confidence to research answers to technical queries and present solutions to partners and senior manager.
  • Good working knowledge of recurring VAT issues faced by owner-managed businesses.
  • Ongoing experience advising similar types of client, either as a Client Manager, or with similar responsibility.
  • Strong ability to multi-task and exceptional organisational abilities.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage priorities and re-negotiate if necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within a team on urgent issues, and the ability to provide guidance and assistance in effecting solutions.
  • Good typing skills.
